SMIL Tools To Get the Job Done, Part 5

By Scott Clark

RealNetworks does it again!

RealNetworks' RealEncoder G2
If you're developing your SMIL presentations to be displayed on the RealPlayer G2, then it's a no-brainer to use RealNetworks' own encoding tools. The RealEncoder G2 enables you to import AVI, MOV, WAV and AU files, as well as encode from a live source, such as a radio broadcast, and it allows you to encode directly from a media source such as a microphone, CD, or VCR.

The RealEncoder G2's wizard quides you through the creation of your RealMedia (.rm) file. Once the file is ready to be created, you proceed to the main RealEncoder screen.

If you used the wizards (you have the option not to use them), the options on the main screen will have already been selected, and you simply press the Start button under "Recording Controls." Basically, that's all there is to encoding a media file using RealEncoder G2...couldn't be any easier.

That concludes our look at the SMIL tools we have to work with, but that doesn't mean that's all there is. Many companies are developing SMIL tools to make your job easier, and with the W3C's SMIL Recommendation, the list is sure to grow. If you know of a SMIL tool that we've missed, drop us a note.
