No artistic inclination
I must admit it, I am no artist what so ever. I do not know how to paint either by computer nor by hand. Thus I usually rely on other people's work to create animations. The internet is very vast and it is very easy to find public domain images ready to be picked up to create animated gifs. My favorite source of images is the newsgroup alt.binaries.clip-art. Here you fill find postings on any topic. Moreover if you wish a specific image one can just post a message and you will surely recieve a reply back.
An other source of inspiration are magazines. If you have a scanner you can quickly scan pictures and use them to create stunning animated gifs. For example the following pic was scanned from a magazine. I just added the text and optimised it a bit, and here is, an original cool animated gif.
