Repligator 4.0:
A Visual Effects Processor

By David Fiedler

What kind of gator do we have here, anyway?

You can't use it to scan, draw or paint original graphics, it only works with five file formats, and you can't even drag-and-drop to it. But Repligator is a very slick little program that, at $39, should be in every designer's bag of tricks (and I'll show you why, don't worry!).

(before you get too excited, Mac users...sorry, Windows only)

Oh, about the supported file formats (for both input and output): they're BMP, JPG, TGA, PCX, and PNG...which ought to be enough, with the file conversion facilities built into most image editing programs, although GIF would be nice, of course.

Unburn Your Mind

Let's say you're bored. Or jaded. Or just too tired to think of anything new today, or the zillions of options in all your graphics programs are leaving you a bit burned out. But you need some new ideas for an important client, and all you've been able to come up with is one silly logo that's nothing but two black letters on a white background:

OK, well, you have to do better than that, but you're burned out. So you start up Repligator (where did they come up with that name, anyway?), which doesn't take long because it's less than 800 KB (why did so many people forget how to code so tightly, anyway?), hit the F7 key, and you get something like this.

Close, But No Cigar?

Pretty nice, but not quite it, so you keep hitting F7, and Repligator comes up with a bunch of interesting images:

OK, folks. It's true. Repligator is about the closest thing to a software-based visual hallucinogen you're going to find. But please, don't abuse it...that's not really why it's sold.
