Software Review:
Adobe Photoshop 5.0 beta
Part 1
By Chris Cosden
An Industry standard gets even better!
How do you improve on the industry standard in graphic design? You take a slew of new abilities, pack them into a familiar interface, throw in a bunch of improvements to features that already exist, and you end up with Photoshop 5.
There are numerous additions to the latest build of Photoshop including:
- editable type
- a history palette
more exacting control over color consistency
- layer effects
- support for 3D
- an Illustrator-like measure tool
- magnetic lasso and pen tools
- a "freeform" pen
However, considering this audience, I will concentrate on those features and enhancements that I think will be of greatest benefit to those preparing graphics for Web use.

My Type Of Improvement
Arguably one of the greatest improvements in Photoshop 5 (for print and Web designers alike) is the ability to edit type once it is created. In previous versions of Photoshop, you have to delete a layer containing type if you decide that you want a different typeface, or if you realize that you've made a typo.
