Background Eraser
The Background eraser tool is effective in generating
transparencies around hard-edged objects. This does not
necessarily mean straight lines and geometric shapes, just
not wisps or poorly defined edges. Rather than a single click,
this tool works by dragging on the area to be erased. One
major benefit of this tool is its ability to tidy up the
fringing of leftover pixels by making them partially
transparent.
The range of the transparency and sharpness of its boundaries
can be controlled by setting the tolerance options and
specifying a different sampling.
The amount of control with this tool is phenomenal. You have
the ability to specify whether the area erased is based on the
first pixel sampled, or only pixels that match the background
color. Specify the tool's brush size, tolerance and
hardness/softness setting. Last but not least, you can
decide whether to erase contiguous or noncontiguous pixels.
