Dr. Website® Archives 2001

October 11, 2001
    Question:
    Dear Dr. Website:
    I've been having trouble with ad popups on my site but I don't want to move because it would take too much time I've been trying to find a script that will close the windows that are embedded into my HTML code by the server is there anyway to close these windows? and if there is can you change the URL to suit the new ads that come on?
    thanks

    Answer:
    It may be possible to do so using JavaScript, though difficult, but to do so would likely violate the terms of agreement you agreed to when you signed up to use the free web site service. That's the way that those hosts pay their bills--by displaying advertisements, in the same fashion that you "pay" for the ability to watch free network TV by watching advertisements. Without the ads, you'd be forced to pay for even standard network TV.
    Thanks

    Question:
    Dear Dr. Website:
    I have one question. How can I use the function flastmod (of SSI) in my www page? I try and try but I am not successful. Please send me one advice.
    Thank you and good luck,

    Answer:
    "flastmod" prints the last modification date of the specified file, subject to the formatting preference given by the timefmt parameter to config. Valid tags are the same as with the include command. You would include the following in your page:

    <!--#FLASTMOD FILE="name.txt"-->

    or

    <!--#FLASTMOD VIRTUAL="url"-->

    You would replace "name.txt" with the name of the file you wish to show the last modified date of, or replace the URL with the URL of that file. And of course, you would have to have SSIs enabled on the web server your pages reside on.
    Thanks,

    Question:
    Dear Dr. Website:
    I have searching for a week with no luck. Is there a way to open a page from the start (not from a link or popup windows) with no toolbar or even fullscreen, again I dont want to open a page first and then open this page. I need to start the initial index page with no toolbar, is it possible?????

    Answer:
    Nope, unfortunately not. The only thing you could do is to open a new window, and then have your script close the original window.
    Thanks
