Question:
Answer: Pick a subject that you are interested in, and create a page about it. Treat it exactly as you would a 'corporate page' that you'd be creating for a client. Promote the site, submit it to the search engines, generate some traffic for the site. Once you feel confident, and have a good grasp on HTML and JavaScript, or at least have the ability to use a WYSIWYG editor to create pages, try your hand at creating some pages for friends and family, local businesses, etc. That will get you experience and something to put on your resume. I would then pick an area of web development that you will be able to make a living from, which these days would be web-based applications and database work. So the areas to study up on, on your own or in a school, are: *HTML *JavaScript *Perl *ASP *XML *SQL *PHP *DHTML
Understand that you won't have to know all of these, but you should understand what they are and how they are used. You ~should~ be familiar with HTML and JavaScript in the very least--the rest will just make your life easier down the road. -- Dr. Website

If you're on an IIS server, you'll need to find a more custom solution, such as an ASP-based password protection scheme.
