Dr. Website® Archives 2001

July 26, 2001
    Question:
    Dear Dr. Website:
    Hi how are you?
This site is very kool!!! Now i need a little help, my problem is basic, i want design my Website with NO BORDER propieties, for example in
    <"http://www.eye4u.comwww.eye4u.com"

no border, please how can make this? No borders? its with Java or Html? Im using Dreamwaver 4.0 but i no want with frames, is possible other method? Thanks!!!
    I waiting a response!!

    Answer:
Thanks for the kind words! You can use CSS to accomplish that feat:

    <STYLE type="text/css"> BODY { margin-top: -8px; margin-left: -8px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0; padding-left: 0; padding-right: 0; padding-bottom: 0; border-top: 0; border-left: 0; border-bottom: 0; border-right: 0; width: auto; } </STYLE>

Just add the above inside your page's HEAD, and you'll be set! Thanks,
    -- Dr. Website

    Question:
Dear Dr. Website: I have a doubt regarding clientscripting... Is there any way to get the IP address of the client machine???

    Thanx,

    Answer:
With client-side (JavaScript) programming, if you obtain that information, you will not be able to save it to a file on your web server. You can, however, do it using ASP or Perl, but that is not what you asked.

    Question:
    Dear Dr. Website:
I want to change careers . I would like to be a web page Designer . Should I go back to school at a community college? or should I pay for training at a computer school? I am not a kid (50) .I live in detroit mich. Thanks for your advice .
I will be awaiting your reply........

    Answer:
If you are interested in a career as a web designer, going back to school wouldn't hurt. What will really help you, however, is experience, and you'll only get that by actually working on and designing web pages.

Pick a subject that you are interested in, and create a page about it. Treat it exactly as you would a 'corporate page' that you'd be creating for a client. Promote the site, submit it to the search engines, generate some traffic for the site.

Once you feel confident, and have a good grasp on HTML and JavaScript, or at least have the ability to use a WYSIWYG editor to create pages, try your hand at creating some pages for friends and family, local businesses, etc. That will get you experience and something to put on your resume.

I would then pick an area of web development that you will be able to make a living from, which these days would be web-based applications and database work. So the areas to study up on, on your own or in a school, are: *HTML *JavaScript *Perl *ASP *XML *SQL *PHP *DHTML

Understand that you won't have to know all of these, but you should understand what they are and how they are used. You ~should~ be familiar with HTML and JavaScript in the very least--the rest will just make your life easier down the road.
Thanks, and good luck with your new career!

    Question:
    Dear Dr. Website:
I'll keep this short, since I'm sure you're busy. Is it possible to design a meta tag that will close a window after a predetermined amount of time? (along the lines of a "refresh" tag)

This would come in handy for automated pages, such as simple "
thank you" pages after a form has been sent.

    Answer:
You can't actually create a new meta tag to do the task, but you can create a JavaScript function that will close the window in a specified number of seconds or minutes. setTimeout(window.close, 5000)

The only problem is that the window will ask the user if they wish to close the window--it will not automatically close the window on its own.
    Thanks,

    -- Dr. Website

    Question:
    Dear Dr. Website:
I have WINDOWS ME . I used FrontPage 2000 to design my Website, but I have difficulty to have a membership section, where people can sign in with their username and password. I like to know, what program you would recommend that does not need to much training?
    Thank you

    Answer:
One of the easiest ways to control access to specific areas of your site is to use the .htaccess file. It's just a normal text file that lists who can access your site/directory, and their passwords. You can find out more about the .htaccess file here:

    http://www.webdeveloper.com/security/
    security_protecting_your_pages.html

The downside of this is that it only words with Apache web servers--still the most popular web server on the net. If you're on an IIS server, you'll need to find a more custom solution, such as an ASP-based password protection scheme. You can see a basic version here: http://www.asp101.com/samples/login.asp
    Thanks,

    -- Dr. Website
