Everyone knows how in flash you can copy a movie clip and then try to edit the copy but to only find it effects the original the same way? I used to know how to but have forgotten how to isolate them so they aren't linked. I can even make a new symbol with the same information in it in a different fla file, then bring it into the first .fla file and it still changes the original symbol. Anyone know how to sever this connection?

Allow me to clarify on the above. In the "Getting Started with Flash" guide inside of Flash it explains creating duplicates of symbols as "instances". It says in order to create an instance of something, hold down ALT and drag out a new copy of the symbol. When I do this, it still links all changes I make on the instance to effect the original.
