I was watching "Call for Help" tonight and Steve Gibson was discussing who has a better security safe OS: Windows, Mac or Linux.
During the topic Steve quickly mentioned, did not elaborate, that if using
Windows as an OS then most people usually use Explorer, which was BAD.
Said we should use Firefox as it's a much better safeguard against security threats, spyware, etc. Apparently Firefox helps to eliminate this problem.
I use windows XP and Explorer.
I've know of firefox, but I just thought it was another browser.
Does anyone have a general knowledge about Firefox and why it may be better? Should I convert?

Firefox (http://www.getfirefox.com) is indeed a free, open source browser. Meaning that many, many people around the globe work together on creating it. It is true that Firefox is a much safer browser than Internet Explorer currently. IE has a great number of security holes and vulnerabilities. I make a fair chunk of change by cleaning up people's computers of adware, viruses, and spyware. How do they get them? The vast majority simply use IE can get these things through malicious pop-up ads. Not much you can do to stop this short of not using IE.

Firefox, of course, brings with it other advantages over IE. It has tabbed browsing which, once you get used to, is invaluable. You can have multiple websites open in one browser window and use tabs to control which one you look at. As a webdeveloper, I love Firefox's support of web standards. It supports a number of technologies that IE simply doesn't. Firefox has extensions, which you can install to add functionality like Ad-blocking, dictionary look ups, and well, many many many different things. Even after spinning around the new IE 7 beta 2 for a while now, which is a much needed improvement, Firefox 1.5 still beats it out hands down. Plus, Firefox 2.0 is due out end of this year.

Course, I would also recommend Opera or Seamonkey instead of IE. Just about anything rather than IE.

Thanks for the feedback, I think I will give it a try.
I should also have our 14 workstations at work convert to firefox too.
We have antivirus programs installed, but I know a few people at work that still
get a messed up PC now and then.

i recommend that you try firefox, opera, and netscape to see which of the 3 you like the most. they are the 3 most popular competitors in the anti-IE market.

Eh, Netscape I would avoid. No, I'd say the most popular non-IE browsers would be Firefox, Safari, Opera, and Konqueror. Any of those I'd recommend (Although Safari is only available for Mac and Konqueror only for Linux - although firefox and Opera are available for all 3 operating systems).

IE can burn (as Firefox has been doing to it lately), the real battle is between Opera and Firefox.

what's wrong with netscape? (i ask because i don't know, not to raise an argument) it generally gets left out of most browser discussions, despite once having nearly all of the browser market.

Netscape sometimes uses the IE rendering engine.

Netscape is poorly maintained. The UI is something awful. It's based on the Mozilla codebase, but they are horredously slow in porting security fixes to it. It's a last stab at maintaining a presense on the web - but an atrocious one. In browser ranking, I would place it below IE. While it does use the Trident engine for websites that need it, that is it's only real positive. You'd be much better off using Firefox (Or Seamonkey) and the IE Tabview extension (or View in IE extension). Although, I've found that IE only sites are in the real minority these days (thanks to increased usage of other browsers) so you could probably suffice with using a browser of choice (say Opera) and opening IE when you need it. Netscape is a hack-job.

I can affirm that statement. Just look at the blood stains on my wall.
