mouseOver zoom on photos?

I'm sure most of you have visited at least one site where the photo gallery within the site zoomed in temporarily with a mouse-over of the image (and the rest of the site fades to 50%, really making the image pop-out of the screen). I would like to do this for a photo gallery for my company's site, but have no idea where to start...

Any ideas or resources?

you would do it with css and layers. On mouseover have command to show the layer. Sorry I don't have a code or example but it's a start ;)
