Hello...I'm not too familiar with many of the illustrator or photoshop options but I can navigate myself around it. I know some basic photoshop tricks mainly for photos when editing my personal collection. I'm diving into something new here and I started using a templates to learn how css sites are put together. The site uses images for background, masthead and navigation. How would go about changing at least the color theme of these .gif images. For example if I wanted the background yellow and the middle section blue. This is extreme of course but just an example. Where do I start? I've attached the .gif image.
Thank You for any help.

you would copy that image and start a new *.psd
place that in the background
then using layers replicate what you see there.
there are also other ways by changing the hue and contrast to do it, but they are not always as specific as you want it to be.
however if you edit on an existing image [such as that page_background.gif] you are stuck in the resolution that it was created in, and alot of times the images will not come out clearly showing your changes you have implemented

also, photoshop hates working with .gif files and will limit you on what you can do and which tools you can use...
do what he said and copy & paste into a fresh .psd file.

Not true - you can use any tool you like.
You may be restricted in the colours you can use and you may not be able to create any layers, but, if you go to Image > Mode > RGB then you change the colour profile from the imported one that was with the gif to RGB

actually, i worded it wrong. I was referring to not being able to duplicate the layer and how it is locked so you cant use blending modes or create new layers...

you can create new layers, however you are still restricted to the color depth you use, once you save the image, as it is defined by the origional gif/jpg/png
