GLP23 04-12-2006, 08:52 AM i want to create site similar to www.justcars.com.au where you can buy and sell online, i will be on a linux server, what do you think is the best code to develop in? and best database i.e. is MySql ok? Stephen Philbin 04-12-2006, 09:17 AM Well I think the most sensible and obvious choice if you're on a Linux server would be PHP and MySQL. TiGGi 04-12-2006, 09:53 AM I would highly recommend ColdFusion, and it will work with any kind of database, MS SQL, MySQL, Access.... <Eddie> 04-12-2006, 02:13 PM Due to the server type and the likelihood of not having ASP/CF installed, PHP and MySQL are the clear choices. <Eddie> 04-12-2006, 02:17 PM Just a thought, check your host for Python or Ruby as these are extremely powerful languages, particularly Ruby on the Rails framework. There's no such thing as best though, it's a case of using the most productive and useful tool for the job. felgall 04-12-2006, 04:28 PM Do you already know any of these languages. Often the best language to use is the one you are most familiar with even if it isn't the most perfect one for what you are trying to do. Which languages are available on your hosting and how much extra you might have to pay to have extras made available may also influence your decision. That's why most people go with PHP and mySQL (because that's what the cheapest hosting options come with). ray326 04-12-2006, 05:34 PM Your link points to a straight static HTML site. On Linux the most common application platform is LAMP (Linux Apache MySQL PHP) so if you go with that architecture you have a greater chance of finding the supporting CMS software you need already written. TiGGi 04-12-2006, 05:50 PM coldfusion works on windows, unix and linux platforms, and as far as the cost the prices are pretty much the same as the php hosting plans! GLP23 04-12-2006, 08:01 PM im going to pay someone to develop the site, i just need something that is easier and less likely to contain bugs, and will create an application that is user friendly... but also cost effective thanks for your replies Michael53 04-12-2006, 10:39 PM If you want to pay for the program check out craigs list, several free lancers there. I know everyone knows this BUT ask for references. After all business is business. GOOD LUCK in your search! GLP23 04-12-2006, 11:36 PM who is craig? skilled1 04-13-2006, 02:52 PM coldfusion works on windows, unix and linux platforms, and as far as the cost the prices are pretty much the same as the php hosting plans! Amen. ColdFusion is the way to go, if you have the resources for an exelent coldfusion coder [if you need someone i have someone with tons of experience i can get you in contact with if you PM me]. PHP and MySQL would be the secondary choice [as the others have also stated] GLP23 04-13-2006, 08:46 PM skilled1 - what are the rates for coding in Coldfusion, and when you say PM, do you mean project management? what would your role be in the project if you werent coding? Michael53 04-13-2006, 09:33 PM Who knows who craig is lol.
