Basic ActionScript question

I want to make something that seems relatively simple:
Have a button on the bottom of the movie that makes everything on the stage fade.
I only know how to do rollovers and have no programming knowledge. How can I make clicking this button effect all other layers on the page simultaneously? Or anyone have any tutorials they can point me to that would specifically explain something similair?

Just put a white patch with around 20% alpha in the top most layer, which covers whole stage and make it as a movie clip.
Make it invisible at initial stage and on button release event, you make it visible.. So this movie clip will fadeout the stage.. You can also have a motion tween in the fade out and fade in movieclip..
