Well, its taking a while for me to load, but that's cause I have a dialup. However, some of your customers may have that, so maybe you could make it so it senses your connection and displays a certain amt of graphics accordingly. Also, I know this isn't coding, but you should edit your grammar (I'm basing this only on the homepage).

No offense, but you should have hired a professional. That site does not invite me to stick around and buy products from you, but makes me click "Back" as fast as I can. I do not want to go into details "why" because they are the "Top Ten Mistakes of Web Design (http://www.google.com/search?q=top+ten+mistakes+of+web+design&start=0&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official) " that are mentioned in every tutorial you can find online...

that was a confidence boosting post i am asking for constructive critisism, not insult.
This is my first attempt at creating a website, the homepage is built as requested by my boss.

i have designed another http://www.devonlightingcentre.netfirms.com that is miles better BUT my manager doesnt like it.

That one is 100 times better than the current one. Apart from the pixelated logo and nav it seems ok.

Honestly the first one was not terrible, just took too long to load, and you went crazy with too many animations.

The second one, once complete really sets the tone for an ebusiness site, professional and sleek, I think that is the way to go, and to help portray that, I think you need a new company Logo.

Yeah, you might want to have a conversation with your manager. The first site will turn off a lot of visitors.

i am in discussion with my manager to change the site. I will use evidence from forums to convince him, and the logo - i like it and the boss likes it - im sure if i resize it - or re-design it, it will be ok.

I think the second site is better than the firts one.
It looks more professional and it load faster then the first one.

Good luck with convincing your manager

It seems to me that you didn't make the second one yourself.

It's just a free template. Take a look at this (http://www.interspire.com/templates/view/125)

Nice try

Ukiller,
I like the second one... thats sad that the manager dosn't like it. Maybe clean up the photos a bit more and leave their backgrounds natral with black borders, they seem to be a bit distorted. Also, I would put the christmas section in another category, and maybe a summer or spring special there. When Christmas comes around, display your christmas special. Pick two or three colors that contrast each other like the first site and have the color of the headers and header boxes reflect one of those major colors. The green does not go well with the blues. The left menu buttons can also be toned down a bit.

Anyway...

Things that will make your site better:

1. Higher quality images that are compressed for the web - each page takes an age to load and I have broadband.
2. A really good logo - at the moment it looks like one that you have enlarged off a smaller image.
3. Less clutter in your layout - it is really in your face.
4. Fewer or no novelty moving things or bits of sample JavaScripts because although they look like a good idea at the time, they mess up any webpage (everyone goes through this phase when learning html).

I hope that was at least a little bit helpful and more constructive than deconstructive.

the christmas box is still there - yes, because it is an essential part of our business. Christmas is the busiest period of the year for us and we want people to see that we do chritmas lighting.

I have modified it to be clearer and more easier on the eye. Also i modified the flash/pictures a little.
