Hey all,

I am currently designing a site for a client, and want to have a couple of JPG / GIF's with faded edges. Some of them will be faded all the way around, while others would only be faded on one side to have them "blend in" with the surrounding colour scheme.

I have Photoshop 7 but I am not completely familiar with the program. I would appreciate any help in this matter that anyone could provide!

Thanks,

James

I don't use photoshop myself, but try expanding the size of the canvas, selecting the bit you want to fade (draw rectangle inside picture margins and use invert selection to fade all around) then use a blur with a large radius. Make sure the background color of the image matches the background image of your page.

Unless ofcourse you want transparency.

A better technique is to use the mask button in the Layer pallete, create a mask for that layer, and then use your gradient tool to create a black to white gradient in the mask portion of the layer to create the fade. This leaves the edges faded, no matter where you may move that layer. It's much cleaner and it doesn't alter the pixels of the original graphic: ie. you can get rid of the mask and you still have your entire graphic intact.

The gradient tool will work great, or for simpler method is to apply gradient layer blending effect.
