Under the photoshop prefrences you have settings for scratch disk
Photoshop is very memory int3nsive so when it runs out of memory it uses scratch disk or you can call it virtual memory. Pretty much it uses your HardDrive to stor information. One thing about Photoshop is that it deasn't release memory when you close the file. It still keeps that allocated memory for itself so it's good idea to restart photoshop from time to time!

If you have multiple harddrives I suggest going into your options and setting the first scratch disk to another drive... THen if needed allow it to overflow onto your other drives as needed.

The directions for photoshop say not to have this scratch disk on your same partition as your installation of Photoshop.
