ARe animated gifs a thing of the past? THey don't seem to work for me over the net any more. When I've searched this question, I see a lot of people have the same problem, but the only solution is in a prgram called Alarm Zone, which I don't have installed. Also, if they are going to work so inconsistently on the user 's computers, are they worth using anymore at all? Is there a lo-fi alternative other than resorting to FLASH?

Neither the Firefox or IE browser have a problem with viewing animated GIF's

I still find then very useful for "wait" type of graphics so the users can watch something while waiting for the server side to execute something

Zonealarm is only one firewall that can block animations. Some other firewalls can do it too. Check the settings in whatever firewall that you are running to see if it has disabled gif animations.

Animated GIFs have their place, but most (amature) sites use them in such a tacky way.

I think that animated gifs do have a long life ahead. In compensation for some annoying ones, they are terribly easy to produce by amateurs, which isn't the case for Flash animations, and many are funny and still manage to surprise us.
