I am a web programmer/designer/developer and I am more and more amazed at how many people want me to fix their "slow" computer.

That's not the kind of work I do or prefer to do, but since I work with computers all day, I can do an alright job of fixing "sick" or "slow" computers. However, with the amount of requests I'm getting, I think it might be worth it to learn more advanced techniques.

Does anyone know of a good site that goes through tutorials on what might be slowing op. systems down other than the obvious (adware, viruses, HD, physical disk issues...)?

Would be much obliged.

Try these sites:

http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

http://www.dougknox.com/xp/xp_fixes.html

Then try using different tools. For example i use just as purely basic tools (which are easy to get hold of) but you can use far more as every tool has its weaknesses and strengths. One tip is when you run these progs first time disable "run at startup":

kaspersky (antivirus and firewall)
registry repair pro
bullet proof soft spyware remover
ATF cleaner (uses such low resources its quicker to enter that program and select empty recycle bin and exit than right clicking the recycle bin and selecting empty, good cleaning tool)
Ccleaner (bit more advanced including NSA deletion, which is multiple overwrite passes and generally a bit better, still extremely speedy)
INAC (startup mananger, simplified msconfig)
registryfix (another registry program, maybe slightly better)
spyware doctor
spyware nuker XT
xoftspy
spyware blaster
