"Critical Stop" sound after XP Pro loads

Everything works great on my PC, but I get the "Critical Stop" sound right at the end of everything being loaded into memory during startup. There is no problem with anything that I use working correctly. This has been happening as long as I can remember so I've lived with it. Now I would like to understand what it is and know how to correct it. I am not an expert but I have explored some of the management tool.

Is there a why I can monitor what programs load and fail to load? Where do I look to see what is running (Other than CTRL+ALT+DEL)? Is there a program I need to get to analyze this problem with?

Any advice you may have is greatly appreciated.

have u looked into the sound and audio devices option in the control panel? u may have accidently set the critical stop sound to play everytime you load windows..u can turn if off in the "sounds, speech, and audio devices" menu.

I have been to the "sounds, speech, and audio devices" menu. The only program event that the critical stop sound was used for was for a critical stop. Windows start up uses its default sound which is played long before I hear the critical stop. I did not notice that from the "sounds, speech, and audio devices" menu I could select NONE for any sound that I did not want to hear. However, I decided to keep a softer "ringer" sound instead of nothing because there may be another actual time when it happens and I'll never figure it out.

Thanks for all the thought you all have put into this. I am sure if you sit at my PC for a while you might find the solution in a short time.

Hi NevadaSam, I am having the same problem you had with the critical stop sound - it happens while icons are being added to the system tray. Did you ever get to the bottom of the problem?

bTaryag: No I the problem has not been fixed. I just changed the "horrible" default critical stop sound to a gentler ring tone. I was also thinking that it is about the time the VIA RAID Tool is loaded that this happens. Normally I would have had to do a fresh install of WinXP pro by now due to other reasons, but because I have another computer that I use to do any "tricky" Internet surfing on, everything else is still running fine.

I usually do a clean install twice a year. This problem has never happened before so when ever I do it again it might solve the problem. No biggie, I have got used to it.

Thanks. I guess I'll dabble around a bit more and then give up. Whats especially weird is that it doesn't happen always - maybe 60 percent of the time or so.

well well, thank you microsoft!!!....

bTaryag: Are you still there? I have fixed my PC by going into msconfig and unchecking the programs that loaded into the tray at startup until I found which one was causing the problem. My email is in my profile.

Okay. I actually tried doing that to figure out which one was causing the problem, but I gave up after a few hours, because with each one, I had to restart the computer a few times - Because the initial problem only happenes like half the time.

Which one did you narrow it down to?

On mine it was Spyware Doctor. It did not take too many restarts, of course unlike yours it happened all the time. I unchecked about half the programs at a time until I narrowed it down.

The biggest relief is knowing what was causing it. I am so use to it and as I mentioned some post back, I changed the sound to a milder ring tone.

I am glad you had this thread marked for instance notification. Hope this helps and I hope others may find their answer as well.

Problem Solved!
Thanks,
Samantha

that's a good start as I have spyware doctor on my computer as well. I will disable it and see what the results are.

Thanks for your help!!!
