Hi everyone!
This is intended as a supplement to the "a guide to dreaming up a domain and website idea." I believe that article was a very good outline of the topic, and I'd like to get more into specifics.
I'll use, as an example, my process for developing my current company's name. We do interactive media and software development. But I really wanted to convey 1) that we come from a bottom-line focused approach and 2) that our major drive was to help companies take more value from their existing data (using data visualization, data mining, etc).
I start off with with three main tools:
--multiple word lists from various disciplines
--a very fast and easy domain search
--a place to check how many other people are using some variant of ideas I get
I use the site http://www.brandfetch.com, a site my group developed for the purpose, because it has all of these in one integrated "Web 2.0" interface.
So, starting off, I'd look for technology words:
Media, Logic, Binary, Interactive, Virtual, Quantatative, Data, Technology, Design.
But how do I convey the business side? One way is, obviously, to meld in business words:
Digital Assets, Internomics (I didn't say they were all good at this point, we're brainstorming!), Diginomics, Business Informatics, Virtual Assets, Information Assets, Information Capital.
Another way is to imply "more than a software company": Beyond Binary, Fusion Design Lab, MetaMedia.
I also wanted to convey this data visualization idea though. So I start looking for "clarity" ideas, coupled with technology:
MetaphoricMedia, SymbolicLogicMedia, Apercu Interactive (apercu means "insight"), DigitalApercu, Quantitative Illustration, Data Graphics
And a few "mesh words": Quantray, Elucidata, Epilogic.
I know this seems like a lot of work, but it's not too bad: I'm able to not only find all of these word ideas, but immediately check the domain availability and web-stats on the frequency, because Brandfetch.com has all of that.
I was leaning towards Epilogic at the time (no longer available), because it was succinct, simple, and conveyed the right idea (epistomology + logic). We ended up choosing LucidData though, which I rather like.
The downside of LucidData was that the .com was for sale, and too much. We went with the dot net. I would definitley be more happy with the dot-com, but I figured since it was mostly an information brochure for the company, and not a destination site, it wasn't too important in this case.
