Distances

Hi all,

I wonder if anyone can help i have seen that on a number of web sites. i.e accommodation sites that you can click on an area and the results will come back with results from surrounding areas also , listing how far away they are.

Can anyone point me in the right direction as to how this is done ?

I just can't work out where the distance information comes from.

Possibly they have either map co-ordinates for the places they are showing or have some from of postal code database that includes this information. If it is by postal code it will only be approximate, if it is by map co-ordinate it can be (reasonably) exact.
