Does anyone have any suggestions/experience with this?

I purchased a Maxtor (don't cringe) external HD less than three months ago. Allllll of my business data has been transferred to it, and over the weekend it died. The power's on, but my puter refuses to recognize it. Yes, I've rebooted, searched for drivers, etc. etc. and nothing is working.

After lots of research, I've discovered this is a VERY common problem with Maxtor HD's, and now I sorely regret purchasing it. After communicating with their customer service, I was told I am OUT OF LUCK. "Hardware fails". Hm. Still in the warranty period, less than three months old. It simply shouldn't have failed.

They referred me to a data recovery company which was VERY expensive - now I wonder if they're not an affiliate of Maxtor and this is a scam - with all the forums I've read about this exact same problem, I'm wondering why Maxtor is still in business!

Anyways, any help is appreciated. If you have suggestions on good offsite storage solutions (backup), I'd appreciate that as well.

Thanks for listening to me ramble!

I would take the casing apart as its just an ordinairy hard drive with a USB adaptor on the back in a case. Install it internally as a slave drive and then try norton ghost or an equivelant program to lift data off. This is pretty much a simplified version of what a data recovery firm will do or even a local computer shop ... its just messing around for a while as to why they all charge so much.

As for hard drives i only reccommend seagate ... ive found them to be the most reliable

The electric book introduces the construction of hard
disk, the theory of data saving, construction of file system, the reasons
of data lost and the examples of data recovery in detail.

There are many data recovery companies which pulled data from dead hard drive. Thera are some expensive one and some resonably moderate. One such company which specialize in data recovery is Stellar Information. All you have to do is to send your hard drive to them. They will analyze your hard drive and send you the result what data can be recovered from it. If you are satisfied by the result then recovery will done. you won't be charge for the analysis they are only going to ask you to pay for the recovery depending upon the gravity of service required.
For more information you can go to http://www.stellarinfo.com/data_recovery_services.htm

Hope they will be helping you in recovering your data.

Best of luck.
