I read the Forum Software guide and decide to install the forum, Phorum. I downloaded it and then the file would not open..what is the problem?

Also in the installation guide I was told to perform many operation that I did not know how to do such as:

3.2 Unpack the downloaded archive
3.3 Place the Phorum files in your website's document root
3.4 Create a database and a database user
3.5 Configure the database access

How do I learn how to do all of this? Is there a convenient instructional resource?

Thank!
Josh

o.k. we'll need a little more infomation:
How are the files packed? .zip, .tar, .gz?
What method do you usualy use to upload files to your server?
Do you have PHPMyAdmin or suchlike avaliable on your server?

Yes, I have a PHPMyAdmin on my server. I usually upload files onto my server via the File uploader that is offered through my hosting service, I have used a FTP program in the past though.

The file was a .zip file.

Thanks

O.k. use a file such as winzip or extract-now to unpack your files.
FTP all the files up into your /www_root/ directory, it easiest if you do it all at once.
Use PHPMyAdmin to create a new database and create a "user" with name and password for Phorum to use.
There will be a configuration file somewhere in forum that you can edit to put in that username and password, if it's not called something obvious like "database.config.php" then you might have to search Phorum's support.
