A few months ago my computer suddenly stopped working. It was on, I went out for a bit, and when I came back the screen was frozen. After that I tried a few things, but everytime I tried to boot it up, the screen would freeze completely after a little while. I found it went for longer if I left it off a while, and wouldn't show anything if I turned it on immediatly afterwards.

After a while, it wouldn't show anything at all.

It currently will turn on - the power starts, the fans go, the keyboard gets power (light goes on when I hit num lock).

The motherboard it now out of the case with one stick of RAM stuck in, the processor with the heat sink and fan, a video card with the monitor plugged in, and a keyboard.

I've tried a few graphics cards, three AGP and one PCI and none of them help. I've tried various combinations of RAM including a new stick. I've swapped out the processor with one in another computer (it worked in the other computer). I've put in a new power supply. And I've tried a couple other motherboards.

I'm totally at a loss for what the problem is now, please help?

Have you tried changing your hard drive? Usually the problem your describing is damaged clusters on a hard drive.

I do not have a hard drive connected. The hard drives I had in it are now being used in a different computer that I found in a junk heap and work fine.

have you checked your heatsink? sometimes it may look ok and hunky dory but the fan could be getting clogged or the contact between the cpu and heatsink may not be placed properly or have enough compound paste. Its a bit dificult without looking because its obviously not a dead part but maybe a slightly faulty one somewhere.

I just took a different computer and tried all the parts in it one by one and the only thing I can find not working is the motherboard so I guess it must be that (though it does raise some questions about the other two I tested on). My new theory is that the psu is bad and killed the other motherboards.
