First of all you make the thumbnail. Then you use normal image code to link to it. Is that what you mean? PS make it a hyperlink to link to the main image

Exactly, you need to create a thumbnail, which is basically just a smaller image of the original image (but not always). Once you do this you can then link the thumbnail image to the main image.
You can use a pop up window, or another webpage altogether. The choice is yours.
