while editing a site i ran into a small problem. the woman has a type of coupon on her page, but she only wants 1 use per customer, is there a way that when a certain ip opens this coupon page that it prints with a random number or anything? so she can keep track of whos used their coupons

ip addresses are owned by ISPs and are usually shared between their customers. About the only way to identify unique visitors is to set up a members area and make them get an account. You could then allocate one number per account. If you collect email and street address info for each account then you at least have the possibility of identifying when the same person sets up two accounts.
