Though I don't have it, I want to purchase JavaScript: The Definitive Guide. I hear it's a very good book.

Yes, JavaScript : The Definitive Guide is very good, but is a reference book, and may not be a good beginner book.

I found The Book of Javascript A Practical Guide to Interactive Web Pages: by David Thau helpful.
