I'm brand new to asp, and i wanted to know...
is there a way to actually make a database that can be accesed in an asp file?
is it global.asa?
I have absolutely no idea what i'm doing, so if any of you have a nice easy tutorial it would be greatly appreciated.
Oh, and i program in javascript, so i have a lot of experience with that. The tutorials i'm finding show me stuff in JScript, which i dont know.
THANKS!!!

hi Greelmo....

I really don't mind explaining the basics (although I already provided a good link that would probably explain it better than I ever could  )...

but...
let me ask a few questions:

you asked this question in the ASP forum (you know that... right?)

so you are expecting an ASP solution (right?)

and you are not expecting a javascript solution (right?)

and your server supports ASP (right?)

and so...

if you answered "right" to each of those questions...
we can move to the next step :)

so... do you have a database already set-up?
if so.... we can start there.
if not... you need one so that we can begin.

let me know when you are ready...
and we'll ride the next wave that crests...

waiting-out the sets...

My computer doesn't support asp, but my server does (brinkster.com)
I have no idea how to even set up a database.
could you help me with that?

okay Dex...

we'll take it in small steps then ;)

do you have MS Access on your computer?
(please say yes... unless of course you don't ;) )

if so...
we can use one of the sample db's to get you started.
...unless, of course, you are feeling adventurous and want to create a simple database of your own using the wizard (which would be a good idea to do... since it's important to have at least a basic understanding of databases if you are going to access them via ASP pages).

let me know when you are ready to continue...

i'm on an imac... all i know is that asp works on brinkster. I'm telling you, i know absolutely NOTHING about this stuff... i just know basic stuff like transfering form variables and stuff...

well Dex...

you may actually be too green for me to help you.

ASP and database integration generally requires at least some familiarity with ASP or databases.

but this makes me curious....
why are you looking to use ASP and connect it to a database in the first place?

normally it requires some sort of need...
but if you don't have either database or ASP knowledge...
I can't imagine why you would be looking to do it at all.

My suggestion:
Get a hold of Access and learn the basics.
Then see if it is anything that even interests you (databases are not for everybody - you gotta have the head for it).

After that... you should go to www.asp101.com (as suggested earlier).

hope that helps in some way...

well...
ya gotta answer the questions y'know ;)

do you have Access?

if not... what db app do you have?

i'm not making any promises Dex...
if the scope of the project requires too much help...
you should just refer your client to me :)

let me know about the db situation...

lol... thanks Dave! :)

my secret is "ASP by osmosis"

(although I must remember to allow myself time to stabalize... or I will drain the conditionals and queries right out of myself :) )

my work here is done :) ...
