Have built and maintain a couple of sites with no particular experience. One is for work and the other for a local minor hockey association. I obviously have personal interest in these sites so they are on my harddrive and I update and maintain them for free. My question is if I pick up the odd project now for profit;
1. how does the client update etc if they don't know html
2. do I keep It on my computer forever backing up the content
3. do I just tell them how to register the domain name and find the hosting site or do it for them?
What do other designers do when working from an office in their home on the household computer.
Thankyou for your help

The client doesn't update the web site themselves, you update it for them so you can charge them ;) OR you develop a Content Management System (CMS) for a bucket load of cash because it takes a lot of time and effort to do so.
Always keep backups of work that you do for clients, might be a good idea to tell them about it as well.
You can tell the client how to find hosting and a domain as well as offer to do it for them, as long as they pay for it :)

if you want to sell hosting to your clients then i also recommend buying a reseller account that way you dont throw away loads of cash then you can easilly upgrade to a dedicated server if you do it that way then you dont become broke i also recommend if you want later on to get a dedicated server then buy a reseller from a host who also provides dedicated servers that way you wont spending time finding a new host.

I allways register the domain (under customers name) @ godaddy.com, and charge a little extra for it (for my work, ya know ;) ), alos I offer to sell them my own hosting (I use an account at 1&1.com currently, but I'm going to move into a reseller account soon). I usually include 1 hr per month of updating, providing they host with me. If they just want to change a blurb on the front page every once in a while, or add some text links to a page, simple stuff, I will usually write them a script to make that easier for them to do on their own; however, it does cost a minimum of 2 hrs.
