Hello everyone,
I am new to ASP and Web database. I was a user of visual basic and Macromedia Flash. Now I am trying to make a simple web application in Macromedia Dreamweaver. I have made it with DSN on local Machine but I want to make a database web application which store and retrieve information from a remote compuer, I mean I want to put my .mdb file on a web server and my .asp page should store date on that file which is stored on a web server. My web server supports .asp, and Front Page Server Extention. Please help me how to do this task. When I give the Remote Info in Macromedia Dreamweaver and when I click on Test Button it gives me following message:
"An FTP error occurred - cannot make connection to host. The remote host cannot be found."
Please help me how to resolve this problem. Every kind of help will be appreciated.
Best Regards
Mirza Salman.

Hi Mirza
"An FTP error occurred - cannot make connection to host. The remote host cannot be found."
This usually means that you have entered the wrong information under FTP Host
Your hosting provider should have supplied you with the correct details to use

Should I tick "Use Passive FTP" option ?
Should I tick "Use Firewall" ?
Shoud I tick "Use Secure FTP (SFTP)" ?
I am using Macromedia Dreamweaver for making asp web application. Please help me that while using my personal web server what should I write on the above options to make my server working well...

Ah okay, sorry I didn't realise you were working locally but since you are for the remote info you should change the access type from FTP to Local / Network and then choose the folder where your website files are located.
Please note you should have the folder the contains the files that make up your website inside the wwwroot folder inside the folder called inetpub on your C Drive.
Finally when you want to view the pages you would put something like http://localhost/mywebsite/index.asp into your browser.

Hi Fvillena,
Really Really thanks. I am very thankful to you for giving me time. I respect your time. Fvillena, the way you described now is OK. I have allready done it successfully. Now I am considering wwwroot folder as web hosting server's directory. I am letting http://localhost/ as my website hosted on a server. Suppose that if http://localhost/ is a website hosted on a webserver. Now tell me the settings for my database. Now I am trying to use FTP but continuouesly failing. please help me. My english is very poor. but i hope that you are getting my point. please help me. I shall be very thankful to you. You are really very very helping.

Hi Mirza
Glad you are making process, the next step is really dependant on whether you are using SQL Server or Microsoft Access, you will read a lot about the limitations of Microsoft Access for a website's database but it will work fine for small to medium sized websites.
Anyway connecting to a database using ASP would take me some time -
The following website is great for learning the basics of ASP
http://www.w3schools.com/asp/default.asp
or for specific information about connecting to a database see
http://www.w3schools.com/ado/ado_connect.asp
My last bit of advice is to make Google your new best friend, if you have a question regarding web development then you can bet someone has had the same question before so just type your question into Google and 99% of time you'll find the information you need.
Good Luck!
PS The book learn ASP in 21 days is also good
