I'm looking for a little guidance. This webdeveloper.com web site is great. While Adobe Coldfusion may be the best technology available to make a web site like the New York Times, I'm looking for other possible approaches, as well. At $1299 (for Coldfusion) for a creative project I'm interested in doing, with not very much revenue generation potential, other approaches make the most sense.
I'm interested in creating a web site about two creative and original yoga teachers - my art about their art. For this, I'd like to develop a login system, server side encryption, merchant processing, content management, esp. video streaming, and connectivity to a database / database interaction - as simply and inexpensively as possible, using freeware and 'modules,' if possible. I know Macromedia's Dreamweaver MX, and have taken many classes in multimedia, including Director and Flash.
I am slightly familiar with paypal and payloadz, but would like to find better values than these. I used dazzle at one point to create an online video from an analog source of a scene from Shakespeare's Macbeth, but now have digital some digital videos - {from a sony handycam which apparently can only write to a dvd with a sony vaio, cd-rs on all other machiens - i'm looking for workarounds}, which I'd like to post to the web. I don't yet have video editing software (the new Macbook Pro looks great, but is also expensive), but am looking for freeware here too. I'm also looking for a free video-streaming computer server.
Someone suggested I use the 1) SUSE Linux distribution OS, an 2) Apache web server - install Coldfusion to run on the Apache, 3) MY SQL, 4) Adobe Flash Media Server, 5) Adobe Dreamweaver - for the front end, but this requires a significant financial investment and learning curve.
In brief my question follows:
As inexpensively, simply and using as mainstream software (ideally freeware - 'modules') as possible, how would I make this site secure, password protected, produce video of A&V teaching yoga (asp or php is one choice I face), accept credit card numbers which deposit money directly into my bank account (15 users a month?), and where anybody's name and contact information who signed up went directly into a secure (MySQL?) database?
Might someone please possibly be able to point me in some helpful directions with online resources, etc? Some links from Webdeveloper.com, a book in the Visual Quickstart vein. I'm looking for a very basic map/approach, where I can get started quickly. I'm very grateful for any thoughts you have about this.
Thanks.
