Are linkbacks still the best?

Hi,

I design web sites for mainly small businesses and everyone is always asking how can they get more traffic. I have been under the impression building link backs, from related sites is the best way to increase rankings ... is that still accurate? I encourage them to add their info. to related directories as well. I feel like I am missing something in advising them. My sites are not very techincal, pretty basic table structure - would my layout somehow be the problem? For example I did the following site: http://www.jameshoben.com/
and cannot seem to get traffic up.

If links are from relevant sites then you are right - backlinks are still very good. In combination with proper content and search technologies.

infact use google adwords if u need to get more traffic, and link backs from relavant sites are best and they give good results.

if u cannot find any relavant sites, then try to find least prob of sites which have some relations with your site and this can even get you some good results.
