Finding domains names that became available recently

Hi,

a customer asked me for developing an application, which detects which domains were deleted recently. Just like justdropped.com or http://www.deleteddomains.com/today_deletions.php .

My idea was:
Getting all domains by DNS Root Zone files and check their avaibility daily. Put free domains in an own database.

My questions:
Is there a more simple solution?
Where can I get DNS root zone file?
Is there a way to check avaibilty without using whois servers?
