I can’t seem to find a good reference on files sizes in flash. What I can find is plenty of information on how to reduce large files sizes. Does anyone have a stable idea when designing what optimum sized projects should be? All sorts of projects; intros, pre-loaders, banners, slide-shows. I just want to make sure I’m getting the best quality for the best file size.
Any help would be much appreciated, thanks.

The file size depends upon the type of project. There is no article on this. You should know that if a project web based then u must reduce the file size much. As for a banner u cna have it below 100kb. And if it is an intro not mare than 1mb. But if u need to have more animation with images then automatically the file size wil increase. The preloader must be very simple and very low in file size. Coz its the first thing to show up and if it that itself takes more time to load then the viewer will get bored. So make it less than 50kb. And by working u will get an idea on how much you can have the file sizes.

Thanks for the help, but I’m looking for something a bit more solid. Something that I can just reference for any number of projects. Are there no file size standards? No one has written their own?

if there are any "standards" they would only be someone's opinion. it all depends on how fast your connection/prossesor speeds are and how long you want to wait.

As you can cover downloads with preloaders people seem to gloss over this. I'm develop alot in flash and think it's great - but do get frustrated when flash guys just ignore file size and imagine that people'll just wait for their work of art to come down.
I aim to get flash swfs in at around 80k (The size of an image heavy html page), and then modularise the build so you are only ever loading the bits of the movie that you need. This means that at broadband you don't even see the preloaders.
