Hosting your own site can be very cheap and seem great - loads of space, anything can be installed on demand etc. The main problem is the speed of your connection. Large backbone providers use OC3 - 155.2 Mb per second! Are you rich enough to pay for that?
what do you use as a program or os to turn your old computer into a server for your web page?

I'm hosting a website right now... I'm not using either of those. I'm using Apache! *yay!*
Anyway, I've actually written a whole tutorial-ish thing on how to set one up if you want to read it:

apache goes with linux I thought? Oh well i dont know a thing about running a unix server or the languages that run off of them.
