My pc has just gone and died,
I was not around at the time but when it was switched on apparently it made a pop sound and now there is no power in it (obviously i have checked power from the wall etc)
Does anybody have any seggestions to what this sound may have been?
Cheers

power supply probably burned out. not uncommon. can pick one up at your local store or online. they are cheap. did u open the box yet and look? probably, if it just happened, u can tell what smoked by smelling it

I have opened it up to have a look to see if i could see anything that appeared to be burned out but I think because the pop occurred immediately as the pc was switched on there is not a lot of evidence to suggest this, plus with regards to the smell, I was not able to take a look at it for a few days after so i guess if there was any it has dissapeared by now,,
Thanks for the response.

Use a fine photographic brush (used for cleaning lenses) and clean all of the PC inside (psu, motherboard, graphic card, ram). Even if you cant smell anything days afterwards you might find burn marks or blackening inside after clearing the dust in the psu fan intake or anywhere else.
Russell is right, a smell can linger for ages, i know someone who once set a psu to 110v accidentally and plugged in to 240v. Nearly torched their whole computer and the smell still lingered after a week.
The cpu as well as the psu can also make a popping sound and you can always remove the heatsink and take the cpu out, if its died it will have a brown burn mark on the underneath in the middle of the pins.
Let us know how its going

I say screw the PC's and buy yourself a mac! They are so much easier to use, and so much better to use. I have not regrets and would never buy a PC again.

aleelee it doesnt make any difference whatsoever whether its windows/mac/linux as thats the OS platform, every computer is made up of universal hardware regardless of OS
