Hello from Turkey

I have just transferred my web site to a new server which has a pretty boring 404 error page which I would like to replace with a personalized one sending them to my home page as I had on the last server. The "file not found" was in the root directory and it was a simple matter to replace it with one of my own.

As a lot of the old dead files were left behind on the old server, I imagine there will be lots of 404 File not found requests until the search engines get up dated. I would obviously like to keep this people on my site for a few minutes at least - who knows, I might have something of interest to them if I can get them back to the present home page.

I have been asking questions about this from the server support people and I get some stuff about an htaccess file which means nothing to me. In fact not a lot of what I have read has been comprehensible.

Can one of you kind souls, point me to someplace where I might find something which is a little simpler then what I have seen so far.

Please do not chop or bite my head off if I have tried to post this in the wrong forum as I don't know where it should go but at least, I can say I am trying.

Cheers and thanks in advance

Jack

During the past 24 hours I have continued to look about and discovered the following which seems to answer all my questions so I will withdraw the question or consider it resolved

http://www.javascriptkit.com/howto/htaccess.shtml

Thanks - I am sure I will be back.
