What am I doing wrong?
When I save anything as a jepg it looks great!!
When I save as a gif, to take advantage of a transparent background, the edges come out very ugly (jagged edges).
What am Idoing wrong? Do I have the wrong settings somewhere in photoshop.
gif's only have 256 colors which is why they don't show nicely.

Jpg is for photographic images and gradients. Gif is for logos and other simple graphics that don't have a lot of different colors and detail. What kind of image are you working with?

kelly,
I am workng with a showcard gothic font that I have placed an image in the letters, everything looks smooth and nice until I attempt to save it as a gif, then it changes the outside edges of the of the letters jagged.

What program are you using?
How many colors are you reducing it to? (Images must be reduced to a maximum of 256 colors to save as .gif.) Are there a lot of colors in the image (the image that's in the letters?)

I believe you are right I may not be able to do this as a gif, I did want the transperancy. I noticed it does the same thing in photoshop or the gimp.

You could save it as .png. That supports transparency.

I think this was prob caused by the anti-alias option for type. If its set to none this often haps but if its set to sharp you should get a better result. Also a good cheat is to create the background colour in your image and then remove it with the selection tool. That way parts of the colour will appear giving a much smoother edge.
png files suffer from less support.

If I save images as GIFs they look fine!

That is a GIF. If you save them as CompuServe they're fine. Like my avatar was saved that.
That is because you are not using more than 256 colors. Try saving something really intricate with a lot of colors and you'll see how it saves
