I think you're going to need to give us more info if you expect to get a useful answer.

i am using 1024x768 for my site and jona is telling me it would better to go to a res. lower then 800x600 if you want everone to see but the lowest i will go is 800x#### because if i go any lower my site will look stupid so i was wondering if i should go with 800x600 instead of 1024x768

Your site should look good on any resloution. Now saying that, I wouldn't worry about resolutions lower than 800X600 unless you are talking about viewing you site in something like a PDA. I'm not to sure what the resolutions on those things are. For "normal" viewing I would make sure it looks good in 800X600 and above.

ok the best thing to do is use 800x600 why is that? coz most of the people use this resolution.

800x600 44%
1024x768 42%

take a look:
http://www.thecounter.com/stats/2003/May/res.php

If you make your site in 1024x768 your site will look funny for the 44% of the users. But if you use 800x600 It will look fine for all the users.

lobo that statistic is wrong. I see from most traffic reports a I view that the stadard is 1024 by 786 and I look at some major web site traffic reports just to get a feel for what people are using sometimes. 800 by 600 is probably the second. Just because your site gets that cross section does not mean thats how the world is. Also I think if a site is designed just with 800 by 600 users in mind it will look like crud on a higher resolution because everything will be very tiny, a site needs to be dynamic and resize to an extent to fit all resolutions like using %'s to make the layout or something like that.

lobo that statistic is wrongAssuming no bias was involved, no statistic is wrong. It simply is what it is. What would make you think that your statistic is any more right than what _LOBO_ posted?

But keep in mind that people with larger screens do not go around with their windows maximized. A properly made site will work at any resolution or window size or even where there is no screen.

Yes but he said that is the majority of users are 800 by 600, I did not see to my site in that. But at my site i get a mjority 1024 by 786 and a lot of sites do get a majority 1024 by 786. If he were to say most of my hits at 800 by 600 it would be correct.

LOBO didn't say a majority of visitors to your site, just that 800x600 was the majority, overall...

Thats what mean he did not say to my site, He did not say the majority of visitors to his site is what I meant. But saying that the most prevelant resolution is 800 by 600 cannot be based on one website.

And the reason you have more users with 1024X786 is because your site is lacking in it's design at 800X600.

I just did some layout changes and I need to fix that menu thanks for pointing that out to me. But I usually views fine on 800 by 600 I just changed my layout a bit last night at 3 am. But still my point is you cant look at one sites tracking and say ok yea most people use this resolution. If you looked at a large number of sites you would see a lower margine of error. Its just like a pole or something you have to look at more then one thing.

The stats at thecounter.com are (presumably) obtained by all sites runing their counters. This would give you *much* more accurate overall stats, as it woudn't be based on any one site.

Really? Ok I bookmarked that site then. Also I change my argument, I guess lobo was correct, I was assuming he was looking at one sites traffic report, so sue me.

Hahahahaahahaha look how many people use ie 5 and 6 and compare it to opera! That is comody.

Why are we wasting 10 posts on this non-consequential issue? Since we are, let me waste one more :)

As Charles pointed out, people using higher resolution does not mean that they are able to see your 1024*768 site - bcoz they may not be using full browser window. My browser window contains hottabs to the left, and windows task bar is at the right (instead of bottom)... effectively requiring me to horiz-scroll on a site designed for 1024px width.

PeO, was there any doubt that IE/Win is the most prevalent browser out there? Thats the reason why people develop IE-only sites, and standards freaks make CSS hacks for IE. If IE/Win's share was 2%, they'd care less (sic). 90% people using IE doesn't necessiate me to do the same. I like Opera, and dont care if some screwball webdesigner developed his site using IE-specific markup.

And the last point: what matters the most to me is the traffic on MY site... which gets 20% hits from NS4-/IE4-. I can't have a site that does not display on these browsers.

lol what makes me mad is they dont even list mozilla, mozilla is probably my favorite browser too.

it seems to me like you already had a proper answer to your original question Kaisa.

And ignoring all of the babble about statistics (or browser types  )...
the answer was correct.

But...
you can make your site any size you want.
Just don't expect many people to be willing to horizontal scroll through it (I wouldn't).

800x600 is safe...
but why not create your site using fliud design.
then it won't matter what size the user's setting are.

and in the words of Mark Twain:

There are lies, damned lies and statistics.

I actually once had a boss who would force us to alter the formula for determining Service Levels so that the number would look better... (corrupt little jack*ss  )

so it appears that Mr. Samuel Clemens knew a thing or two about statistics (they can say whatever we need them to say).
I work with data all day... I know all about that

800x600 (or fluid)...
in my opinion :) ....

Well, now, let's not be too hasty. I'd certainly put some trust in bikinis when worn while riding a surfboard. Of course, I'd be trusting that the they'd come off of the girl I was watching...
