Hello...

Our main website www.MyCompany.com will have a link to www.ShopMyCompany.com where visitors can purchase stuff. Both domains are owned and operated by us but by necessity they're on different servers.

The link will be a button saying something nondescript like "buy stuff" or something. Marketing dept does not want text on the main webpage or the button explaining we're taking you a different domain. The hyperlink will, however, open the sales site on a new window so there's at least that small indication that something's up.

Is that enough? Are we responsible, caring, admins with this setup or should we make it a bit clearer that we're taking users to a new domain, even if both domains are owned and operated by us?

Thx,
D.

A lot of businesses do this - some just to transfer to a secure domain, others use ebay stores or the like. I think as long as you make the sites resemble each other style wise it should be ok.

Who's to say how many potential customers you will lose over it due to "unsuraty" (secure wise) of the change of domain?

How many would even notice in the first place?

The new window should be enough. You might add "(Site opens in new window)" or something next to the link -- just to warn the user, and discreetly imply that they are being taken to somewhere "external," but that's optional, a courtesy to the user.
