I usually use the previous version and I keep running into this one thing with alignment. Normally I can select two layers. The one I select first is the "point of reference" for the alignment of the subsequent layers. So when I start hitting the align buttons everything aligns on the layer I want.

How the heck do you do this in CS@. I can't figure it out for the life of me. Every time I align something they align together.

Does this make any sense?

To align selections and layers within an image
Do one of the following:
To align the content of a layer to a selection, make a selection in the image. Then select a layer in the Layers palette.
To align the contents of multiple layers to a selection border, make a selection in the image. In the Layers palette, select the layers you want to align. Shift-click to select contiguous layers, Ctrl-click (Windows) or Command-click to select noncontiguous layers.
To align the contents of layers with the content of the active layer, select the layers you want to align to the active layer. Shift-click to select contiguous layers, Ctrl-click (Windows) or Command-click to select non-contiguous layers.
Select the Move tool .
Select one or more alignment options in the options bar.

I usually link all the layers I want to align, (including the reference layer), then select, in the Layers window, the basis layer (the reference), then go to Move Tool. When presing the Move Tool, in the upper toobar the Align buttons appear. Now click the Align type (top edges, vertical centers... or whichever...). The linked layers (except the reference layer, which will say still) will align upon the reference.
