1&1 has great hosting packages and cheap.

Stay the hell away from Godaddy! Nothing but hassles and upselling.

I must admit that I checked out 1&1 and, over several messages, it took between 2-10 days to get an answer.

Check out BlueHost (http://www.bluehost.com/). I use them and they have been excellent!

I like to have domains with unlimited sub-domains, unlimited facilities on emails (IMAP-PO3 support, autoresponder, forwarding etc. )

I've been with godaddy for years with several sites. Great service, essentially zero downtime, no upselling or other issues for me. They have the services you mention, at no additional cost. I recommend them highly.
