how to zoom in and out on images in browser?

i need a slideshow or image viewer that can be inserted into a html page without requiring any external scripting, it has to be able to randomize and zoom in out and pan,,,,any ideas?
javascripting doesnt seem powerful enough, flash isnt favoured and im having trouble with any other solutions

there are many ways to use javascript for something like this...this is the perfect kinda project for javascript.

to do it without flash or JS, you would need Scalable Vector Graphics, so if your images are photos that option is out of the window.
