Please Help This Newbie On Social Networking Sites!!

Hi,
I am a complete newbie in web designing. So far I have done programming in java and C++ only. I want to create build a social networking website like myspace/facebook/hi5.
Since I have aboslutely no web design experience should I hire someone to do it or do it myself?
Are the founders of myspace/facebook/hi5 also the builders of the site or did they hire other poeple to do it?

Please any reply would be greatly appreciated.

how difficult would be for a decent web developer to build facebook.com??

I've never seen it but if it's similar to myspace or xanga then it would probably be several thousand hours. It takes a lot of functionality behind the scenes (i.e. on the server) to support the ease of use of those sites.
