Forum Board Smiley Faces

I'm building a website that will have a forum board on it. I need to know how to set up my forum so that when a user types a emoticon like this ----> :-)
in the forum text area it will display a smiley image on the forum board. If anyone can help I sure would appreciate it.

For your forum you must be using a serverside language, so it is easiest to parse the smilies serverside.
What language are you using for the forum?

Hi brendandonhue, the fact is my friend I do not have the foggest idea what your talking about. Sorry, but I,m new to this programming stuff. I have done some copy & past jobs with a little chopping thrown in to get the scripts to fit in, but no programming on my own.

The forum board I have comes with my membership at Boomspeed.com web hosting. I am trying to build a website with tutorials and other stuff like graphices, color charts, links to websites where floks can download softwares. In other words a helps website for "Newbies". And wanted to add the smilies to the forum if possible.

What language is the board powered by? PHP? ASP? CGI?
If you really don't know, then yes I'll help you do it in javascript but it wont be as reliable.

brendandonhue I was not sure what you ment by "What language is the board powered by", but I do now. I'm not 100% sure although I believe its CGI, but give me a little time and I will find out for sure. Oh by the way, "THANK YOU" for helping me out here :D

Do you know how to do this? I hope so...... LOL because I'm lost..........
