Hi, I knows lots of people on here are Firefox fans and now I am trying to write better (standards compliant) code - I tend to use Firefox more and more.
BUT
I find it keeps hanging when I try to open some web sites. One of mine in particular. Is it my site? Or is it Firefox?
I found this Firefox Hangs (http://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/freebsd-gnome/2004-March/005508.html) where someone seems to have taken measurements of some sort.
The thing is ... when you visit a site and click on a few links and everything is okay ... and then you click on a link and nothing happens for half a minute (or more) your natural reaction is to think the site is broken.
So I'm thinking of putting a big warning on my site 'If you use Firefox and pages take a long time to load - this is a known bug - use Internet Explorer instead'
OR
Is there something I can do about it on my server?
Thanks for any responses.
(Incidentally there is lots of stuff on the web about changing various preferences in Firefox - none of these seem to make any difference)
Ultimately standards compliance fades into insignificance if the leading 'standards compliant' browser hangs when opening pages.

What version of FF are you using? Personally I've never had or witnessed any such problems.

Hi, I'm using version 1.5.0.7 - if Firefox tells me there is an update I let it do it so I guess that is the most recent version.
It seems you are lucky if you don't experience it. Here is something else I found Bug reports on Mozilla site (https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=277547) so it seems a lot of people experience this.
In a sense I am not bothered about fixing it myself - my big concern is people visiting my site and thinking my site does not work properly. Although - to be fair - I get the feeling that if you suffer from it, it seems all sites hang.
There is loads of stuff on this on the web. Just hoping that one of the people on here that are big Firefox fans can tell me I need to do something to my server.

Without a link to the page it's impossible to help you.

Firefox NEVER hangs up on me. Internet Exploder tends to be troublsome sometimes though.
I only use it for windows updates.
It may be your site.

Does Opera also hang on the same sites?

Ever since I installed IE7, I find the 'start' button for Windows XP hangs for a second. At least first thing in the morning when I turn the 'puter on.

Hello and thanks for replies. If you click on the links I posted it seems it is not just my site. Lots of people experience this 'hanging' with Firefox. When I use Firefox it hangs on lots of sites.
It will often work fine while viewing 5 or 6 pages then you go to click on a link or submit a form and just nothing happens. If you click the Go button at the top to go to the same page you are on - sometimes this refreshes the page sometimes it doesn't.
Looking at the stuff on the bugzilla.mozilla site - lots of people are reporting this.

Without a link to the page it's impossible to help you.
It isn't any one page - I can go to the same page 4 times and on the 5th visit - it hangs. I test extensively in IE, Opera and Firefox. Firefox is the only one with problems. And it is on other sites too.

Thanks for your answers. There is no point me posting a link to the site in question because it's basically a copy of a site I did a few years ago and you'll give me a hard time - it hasn't even got a doctype. (I just tried adding one and boy did it all fall apart - still I do know better now but haven't got time to fix the site at the moment.)
However, on google this morning Firefox did the same thing. Did a search, clicked on a few links - went back to Google - clicked on a link and .... nothing. Status areas shows ... 'waiting for www.?????.com'
The problem, I believe, is not site specific. It's a problem with Firefox. I would be interested to your reaction to the links I posted above. Those people sound pretty switched on to me but they are having the problem too.

It's the latest release of Firefox it is quite buggy and unstable.
Don't worry it isn't your computer. One site I find it particularly has trouble with is www.myspace.com it never used to just the latest release a bit of a drop in the usual mozilla quality. It kind of pisses me off but at the same time they have been great for many, many releases so just hold out for the new release and give them a break.
So yeah, it is a documented problem and him giving you links would not help to fix the problem. Nothing we can do I'm afraid.

myspace.com has 255 html errors and many more css errors, no doctype and is in quirks mode. In any case, I do not have any problems viewing myspace.
I can't comment on people who have trouble with their installation of FF. I have no such problems so if you viewed a forum of people who have no problems then you would think FF was perfect.
Anytime you write invalid code, you cannot expect any one browser to display it correctly. Without a doctype, you are in quirks mode and using a broken box model. If your code is invalid in any way, you can't expect any browser to display it correctly.
I am saying I have never had the problems you are talking about on any of the 10 computers I maintain so I can only think it is your installation.

Or it's a buggy release...yeah I reckon so seeing as it is pretty well documented on the internet and many, many people I know have had similiar problems. Google it.
Also the fact that they are working so hard on 2.0 is probably why the issues haven't been addressed. As far as I know FF2.0 has been released so I will update to that and probably not get another problem ever again.

Actually the mozilla code base all the way back to Navigator has had a consisten problem where the underlying browser process gets disconnected from the UI. Often you can close the window but netscape.exe or mozilla.exe or firefox.exe will still be a running process and will prevent another instance from starting up.

Yep, exactly the problem I was getting. Problem is people swear blind it's perfect unless it happens to them.

FFx is far from perfect. It is better though and easier to use. I have this same problem from time to time. This thread has just lifted some of my stress. I do however notice less hangs since I changed my fasterfox to "disabled", and try to only have one window open at a time.

It's just a lot easier then IE, that's all I can say.
