How to restrict access

I'm currently trying to update my website. I had an idea of having special articles for members of the site. The question is how do I set up passwords for the articles I want to restrict access to? Do I need to place the article on a database? What?

Put them in a directory and protect the directory with Basic Authentication.

but let say you want members of you're website to be able to acess the file, do I give them the password for the directory or I do something else?

Yeh, pretty much. What server is this to run on btw? There are fairly simple ways of having multiple users depending on what you've got server wise.
