Apache - change HTTP Status Code

I've got a linux box running Apache 1.3

I was wondering if it was possible to change the HTTP Status Code it sends out, particularly on 404 page not founds.

In the header of the output there is a "HTTP status code" variable. This is what I'd like to change.
