I'm new to the area of SEO and online marketing. I have a website and I would like to use SEO to promote it.
My questions is: Is it worth the $ to hire someone (e.g. elance.com, guru.com, getafreelancer.com) to do some SEO work on the website? Some of the freelancers on the site charges up to thousands of dollars so it's not exactly cheap.
What have been your experience with this?

oh gesh it's hard to say... your in a very hard spot.
What type of site are you running? Also if your depending on the site to make a living RIGHT NOW you may or may not be better holding on to your operating captial.
If your site was developed right the first time you shouldn't need to do so much in SEO.
If your looking at online marketing that's a whole other issue. Why don't you post the type of site you have and we'll see what type of options might be best for you.

Don't look at these guys who want thousands of dollars to do it upfront.

You shouldn't have to spend $1000s. There are plenty of people doing it for $200 or less on sites like ScriptLance.com & GetAFreelancer.com
It's actually pretty easy to do once you've learned the basics, but it can get pretty time consuming building all those backlinks. ;)

Look for someone that has proven results... check references.

It will be better if you could get hold of somebody who has worked in this field for considerable period of time and has collected repute and experience in it. Don't worry much about dollar spending at this time. If you could get somebody intelligent then your dollars will be worth paying for him.

I have similar question. I want to hear from the developers that used SEO services and recommend a good SEO company. Going thru freelance sites may get a cheap SEO guy, but will he/she do a good job? Moreover, we need to give our code to these guys so that they can optimize it. If anyone knows a good SEO company, please let everyone know.
I read Aaron wall's book and implemented it. There are some good points in the book. Aaron charge #### per hr for consultation, that's just beyond me. I am interested in finding out about a good SEO who doesn't completely drain my marketing budget.
Let's make sure we don't mention rates, as it is not allowed on the forum. Thanks!
