I grew up in Illinois and Ohio, where it was called "pop". But I've been living in New Jersey now for almost thirty years, where it's known as "soda" (and where many people will give you a puzzled look if you ask them what kind of pop they have).

I've lived in Minnesota My entire life (20 years), and have always called it Pop. For me "soda" just sounds 50's.

In Missouri I never hear 'pop', it's always soda.

Depends on where in Missouri. In World Series Champion St Louis Cardinal (I love saying that) country, it is soda. Over where I've moved to on the wrong side of the state where they keep the 3 consecutive year 100 game losing Royals, it's pop.

in the south (US) it's often referred to as "coke," no matter what you get.

"what kind of coke do you want?"
"mountain dew."

Neither.... Where I grew up it was always "soft drink".

Where I come from 'soft drink' is gin.

Where I live (Australia) it's primarily called soft drink.
Soda is rarely used, if ever and
Pop in Australian either means Grandfather or is a generalized onomatopoeia.

Soft drink, soda, and pop up here in Canada.

However, I generally go for "juice". ;)

That sounds silly. We'd rather say "cola" here instead of coke as a collective term for these drinks.

Are you kidding me? Pop sounds 50's, here in the real world we say Soda. :p

This is probably helpful to the debate:

Pop in the US can also refer to one's father or as an onomatopoeia (as in Snap, Crackle, Pop!)

Mainly I use soda, because pop sounds weird. I'll use pop sometimes, but that typically tears a hole in the space time continuum.

I call the fizzy, mouth-watering liquid stuff "Soda" from my location of Connecticut.

Hmm... for some reason I just felt like saying that in a weird way. :D
